OICI Ghana believes CHANGE is possible

Do you know how many people in Ghana, a country rich in gold, cocoa, and oil reserves, still live below the poverty line? The answer: 1/3 of the population. In Northern Ghana alone, 70-90% of the population lives in poverty, making it one of the most malnourished regions in Africa. According to the World Health Organization, over 400,000 Ghanaians currently live with HIV/AIDs and at least 204,000 children have been orphaned as a result of the epidemic.

In response to these alarming statistics, OICI Ghana has set up skills training, economic empowerment and community health programs to directly address the needs of affected populations. Since 1971, through partnerships with USAID and local companies, OICI Ghana has been able to change the lives of hundreds of thousands of people whom have received training in sustainable farming techniques and small business development. OICI Ghana has also provided financial support to improve education and health infrastructure among communities where high unemployment, poor health and food scarcity are commonplace. Moreover, when disasters such as the 2009 floods in the Northern regions of West Mamprusi and Kpandai strike, OICI Ghana is quick to mobilize and distribute urgently needed relief supplies such as insecticide-treated nets, blankets, and plastic mats.

Most recently, OICI Ghana launched a Skills Development and Income Improvement Program aimed at assisting unemployed people interested in raising sheep. To date, 135 sahelian sheep have been distributed to 27 program participants who have each received 5 sheep (one male and four pregnant females). This program, along with other initiatives, is a concrete reminder of OIC’Is work in Ghana, where each program impacts the well-being of tens of thousands of people.

If you are inspired by the work that OICI Ghana is carrying out, please consider donating to our work. Your donation will help to increase OICI’s impact, not only in Ghana, but also in other countries where we are providing essential assistance.
